Notes |
Jean-Pierre Yves was born in the slums of Port-au-Prince in 1942. Brought up by an unkind step-mother, Yves escaped to an ideal world on paper. His little sketches and paintings helped him overcome periods of despair. By age 15, he was employed as a dock worker in the busy harbor of Port-au-Prince. He joined the Centre d'Art in 1965. His work consists mainly of small nature scenes. Since the mid-seventies his whimsical jungle paintings which mix African and Haitian animals and vegetation have become popular with American and European collectors. |
